BCC Survey – New Apprenticeship System is Creating Uncertainty
The findings of the BCC’s annual workforce survey have revealed that the new apprenticeship system is increasing costs and uncertainty for businesses.
The survey of over 1,400 businesses found that nearly a quarter, (23%) of levy-paying firms, have no understanding of the Apprenticeship Levy or how their company will respond to it. Businesses with a pay-bill of less than £3m fall under the levy threshold and can still apply for apprentice funding. However the survey revealed that 66% of these companies have not taken any direct action to use the funds or are not even aware of it.
Commenting on the survey revelations, Sally Lucas, Executive Director at C&W Chamber Training (CWCT) said: “The BCC survey findings reinforce the need for clearer guidance and support for businesses who would like to access Apprenticeships, but are unsure of how to do so. We, at CWCT, have expertise on hand to support businesses to successfully navigate the apprenticeship system and ensure that organisations take full advantage of the huge benefits apprenticeships can bring to business.
“The mixture of on and off the job learning ensures that Apprentices learn new and valuable skills and can be used to train both new and existing employees.”
